Born Days record release show!

$10, $5 with valid student ID.

BORN DAYS was born out of grey Chicago skies & an experimentation with soundscapes that could evoke a dark and apocalyptic setting. BORN DAYS is the solo workings of Chicago musician MELISSA HARRIS. Her electronic music is considered dark pop and is rooted in her experience with daydreaming, moon gazing, and a fascination with retro synths and samples. She arranges, performs, and records everything using an mpc drum machine, original vocal arrangements, ambient found sounds, and a variety of different instruments and synthesizers in an attempt to capture something raw and true. Her first EP “Be True" is being released this summer.

Lykanthea is Lakshmi Ramgopal, an ambient electronic artist who divides her time between Northampton, MA and Chicago, IL. Her debut EP Migration drew praise from Chicago Reader, Chicago Tribune, and Noisey, who writes that “Lykanthea’s soundscapes are about crafting an overall echo of a memory." Her performances feature synths, harmonium drones, choirs, and processed vocal improvisation that draws on a decade of training in vocal techniques. In addition to appearances at NYU’s Occult Humanities Conference and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, Ramgopal has toured Europe and collaborated with composer Paula Matthusen on a sound installation for the American Academy in Rome’s show “Cinque Mostre" while she was a Rome Prize Fellow from 2014-2015.

Her debut album, ‘Scenes Through the Magic Eye’, was released on Nov. 30th, 2014 via Mythical Records. BLACK BEAR COMBO
Black Bear Combo is a four to six member brass/reed band. Our sound is a raucous mutt channeling the common energy between traditional music from eastern Europe and the Balkans, punk rock, and free jazz. Since 2002 we've brought our sound to clubs, basements, festivals, weddings, funerals, parties and streetcorners across the country.

LA COSA
La Cosa is a basement rock, dirty sock of a band, but we can go synth-punk in a flash or be total divas in a goth wasteland.... However, we ALWAYS look good. And we're planning something devilish for Halloween!

Laughing Eye Weeping Eye's Album Release Show with Rasplyn & Columba Fasciata!

Laughing Eye Weeping Eye's music exists somewhere between the black soil of earth and the void. These are songs that travel through the unknown and esoteric. Like her Tarot readings, Rebecca Schoenecker leads us through the arcane, with lush vocals from gothic cathedrals and harmonium played in secret rooms. Patrick Holbrook, her consort, adds organ inspired keyboard drones and strings via ukelin and turkish spike fiddle. The mundane mixes with the alchemical; the flesh transverses the metaphysical. The result is chilling and sparse.

Columba Fasciata is the project of Whitney Allen, Nick Hagen, and Mark Fragassi, who are also members of the art punk band Toupée. These songs come from their cobwebby corners, delving deeper into the psychedelic after hours. Allen's haunting vocals deftly hover over the delicate guitar lines that are the melodic center. Staggered drum machine rhythms fill out the sound and lend to all of the songs a strangeness that contrasts wonderfully with the dreamy pop atmosphere throughout.

Rasplyn is the solo project of Carolyn O’Neill who uses her experience with classical composition, and as a Clairvoyant Reader and Energy Healer, to create mystical and visual landscapes with her music. Her style is dark and cinematic, beautifully filled with textured layers influenced by world culture and mysterious natural forces. SOAK
SOAK has won widespread praise, and comparisons ranging from Laura Marling to Cat Power, for her textured tales of adolescence, family and friendship. Still just 18 years old, Bridie Monds-Watson has been performing in her home of Derry since the age of 14, where she'd split her time between studying, the local skate-park, and her burgeoning songwriting (touring in the school holidays, and launching Derry's City of Culture hours before a GCSE exam). Then, in 2014 she became the first signing to CHVRCHES' singles label, releasing the beautiful 'Blud' and touring with the likes of George Ezra and Tegan & Sara. In the same summer that most of her friends got their ALevel results, SOAK penned an album deal with Rough Trade Records and aired the beautiful 'B a noBody'.

Her forthcoming album will cement Bridie Monds-Watson's ascent from a raw talent to a unique artistic voice for 2015 ("a vivid portrait of teenage deep-thinking…intricate, ambiguous psychodramas" Guardian)

Rasplyn

Rasplyn
Rasplyn is the solo project of Carolyn O’Neill who uses her experience with classical composition and film to create mystical and visual landscapes with her music. Her music is dark, but beautiful and filled with textured layers influenced by world culture and fantasy. Her style is transforming as she experiments with adding vocal elements into the environments she creates.

Quinn Tsan

Quinn Tsan
Hailing from Minneapolis, Minnesota, singer/songwriter Quinn Tsan began playing music in 2008 after relocating to Chicago, IL to sing back-up for Joe Pug. Classically trained in dance though always having an affinity for music, Tsan quickly immersed herself in the local scene, going on to sing for Sarah Holtschlag, Rachele Eve, Johnny Lewis, and Sima Cunningham, among others.

It wasn't until 2013, when Tsan began playing guitar and writing her
own songs, that she defined herself as someone to listen to carefully.
The vulnerable and sometimes devastating quality of her voice combined with acoustic guitar offers a unique invitation to the audience, often leaving listeners spellbound by her melodic inflections and heartbreaking delivery. Tsan is currently recording her debut EP which is set to release late 2014.

PAS MUsique (NY)
Pas Musique is a group which creates musical output through the form of abstract sound. The term ‘Pas Musique’ translates to ‘not music’ in french, metaphorically negating everything that is established in music and starts from a clean perspective. The viewpoint fuels our creativity to create our own world of beauty. The aesthetic underpinnings are defined by the notion that music can be whatever the ear perceives. It’s a conception fueled by the love of life and art. It’s a desire for honest artistic self-expression. Matchess is the solo work of Whitney Johnson (who also plays in the excellent Verma and Disappears’ sideproject, E+), Chicago resident and general sorceress. Johnson’s voice is like a hammer that won’t stop. Over the top of a bed of minimal rhythms, synthetic melodies, and guitar squalls, her vocals spin out of control like an ancient spiral circling toward the cosmos. I imagine some future civilization unearthing her music in 1000 years and holding it as a sacred relic. Of Earth And Sun (Colorado) is dark ambient music merging with loud chromatic drone, psychedelic, and ritual elements which are structured and sized into a new and original form of artistic and conceptual creation. This music plunges listeners into the depths of the supernatural; into a completely inhospitable environment from the point of view of human understanding, acquiring a ‘dark psychedelic’ sound verging on ‘noise’ and ‘doom’, which transforms into an unfathomable inner cavity of mystic and ritual symbolism that viscerally affects the energies flowing in the body and mind. This trance state of consciousness offers opportunity for purification and harmonization of one’s body, soul and mind; to die and to be reborn anew. http://ofearthandsun.bandcamp.com/

The work Shira Piven has done with Tim Robbins and Sabra Williams from the Actors Gang has been transformational for the inmates because it increases self-esteem and tolerance and reduces recidivism.

This two-hour workshop is designed to inspire and to awaken our understanding of the emotional states: Anger, Fear, Happiness and Sadness. Commedia is a form of theatre characterized by masked “types" so we will have masks and costumes available but please feel free to come in COSTUME!
